Angels of Liberty - Angels of Liberty (2013)
With little to no marketing, word has spread about the Angels of Liberty, making it a classic in Goth venues and sessions, and generating a considerable fan base. I knew that. What I didn’t know, was that listening for the first time to Angels of Liberty for any Gothic Rock lover is no insignificant act. Take the release of Gothic Music Records, “Angels of Liberty”, a 2-CD collector set freshly out of the press, for instance: How does it affect your average Goth? Here is my experience.
This release includes the 2 first EPs of the band: “Monster in Me” and “The Black Madonna”, both originally released in 2011. It has a great design, it’s a real collector set, and beyond a doubt you can tell efforts have been put on the look and packaging. The mysterious being on the sleeve made my curiosity and impatience rise one more step. From the first listen, I could tell it was something big. Angels of Liberty’s music caught me, thrilled me, and left me with a poisonous addiction (they’re vampires aren't they?). This is real Gothic music from the old days made today. Intense, passionate, theatrical music “homemade” by two Gothic Rock lovers for Gothic Rock lovers. It’s terribly groovy, “unashamedly Goth” -as they say themselves-, and most of all it is DARK and filled with drama. No wonder it is one of the big revelations of the past two years. Tracks like “The Black Madonna”, “Weaving Spiders” or “Shadows Come from the Light ” gave me the urge to frenetically move my body. Almost all the songs on both EPs are authentic dancefloor fillers. “Mars & Minerva” is less danceable, but not less dramatic with heavy drums, amazing guitar effects, and hypnotic keys and vocals. “The Hermit”, the intro of the “Monster in Me” EP, reminded me of Tim Burton movies, like a childish yet gloomy music box.
Overall I got the feeling I was listening to a band contemporary of the early Rosetta Stone and Nosferatu, that is, a band of the late 80’s to mid-90’s. Theatrical, tongue-in-cheek imagery suggests a Glam Rock influence. I have been deeply impressed by this release. It feels like a breath of fresh air, and at the same time it feels like old school Goth Rock. So beware, fellow Gothic Music lovers, as you might get addicted very soon like me to Angels of Liberty’s intoxicating hooks. You’ll then wonder where the hell have these guys been before, and why it took you so long to get to know about them. Don’t miss it this time or you’ll regret it later!

Trotz quasi nicht vorhandenen Marketings haben sich die Angels of Liberty in Gothic Rock Clubs eine standhafte Fanbase erarbeitet. Wir wussten es. Was wir aber nicht wussten ist, dass der Erstkontakt zu Angels Of Liberty für jeden Gothic Rock Liebhaber kein Act der Bedeutungslosigkeit war. Nehmt die Neuerscheinung auf Gothic Music Records - "Angels Of Liberty" - ein 2 CD Sammlerset frischt gepresst und beschreibt wie es euren persönlichen Geschmack auswirkte - so war es bei mir:
Dieses Set beinhaltet die beiden ersten EP's von der Band: "Monsters In Me" und "The Black Madonna", beide erstmals erschienen im Jahre 2011. Es ist ein sehr schönes set für den Musiksammler mit einem großartigem Design und man kann ohne Zweifel sagen das großer Wert in das "Look & Feel" gesteckt wurde. Die mysteriöse Erscheinung auf dem Cover machte mich neugierig und lud mich ein den nächsten Schritt zu wagen - beim erstmaligen Hören ich meinte festzustellen da ist "Irgendwas". Die Musik von Angels of Liberty hat mich gefangen, durchdrungen und hinterließen mich vergiftet. Man sagt sie seien Vampire ...
Das ist echter Goth von den guten alten Tagen - heute gemacht. Intensive, theatralische Musik gemacht mit Passion - zuhause produziert von 2 Liebhabern guten Gothic Rocks. Sie ist unfassbar groovig "unverholener Goth" wie sie es selbst bezeichnen, das wichtigste von allem aber ist siw Schwarz und gefüllt mit Drama. Kein Wunder dass rückwirkend auf die letzten 2 Jahre eine der größten Entdeckungen der Szene sind. Titel wie "The Black Madonna", "Weaving Spiders" oder "Shadows Come from the Light" zwangen mich, pausenlos meine Körper zu bewegen. So gut wie alle dieser Songs auf dieser Zusammenstellung sind hemmungslose Tracks für den Gothic Rock Dancefloor. "Mars & Minerva" ist etwas ruhiger, aber nicht weniger dramatisch dank der schweren Druzms, den begeisternden Gitarren, den hypnotisierenden Keyboards und Gesängen. "The Hermit" - das Intro der Monsters In Me EP, erinnert mich an jene Tim Burton Filme - wie eine verrückte Musicbox voller schwarzer Musik. Zusammenfassend kann man sagen ich hörte soeben einer neuern Band zu, ähnlich den frühen "Nosferatu" oder "Rosetta Stone" stilistisch entsprungen den späten 80-90ern aber ganz von heute. Theatralisch, mit eine leichten Attidüde des Glam Rocks, ich war mehr als begeistert.
Es fühlt sich an wie ein Atemzug frischer Luft, aber gleichzeitig auch der Tradition des Gothic Rock verpflichtet.
